Sailing Through Kornati & Telašćica National Parks: Racing Thoughts & Quiet Anchorages

A gorgeous day of sailing today as we crossed through Kornati National Park and Telašćica Nature Park toward Pašman. Winds hovered around 14-19 knots, giving us the perfect conditions to sail through the maze of islands. Pic below of Kornati islands scattered across the Adriatic borrowed from the web 🙂

The Kornati Islands are one of Croatia’s most famous sailing areas with dozens upon dozens of rugged islands, cliffs, hidden coves, and impossibly blue water stretching in every direction. Meanwhile, Telašćica Nature Park is known for its dramatic coastline and crystal clear bays. Flying across the water surrounded by scenery like this is exactly why people fall in love with sailing! Unfortunately, my photos just didn’t do justice to what we were witnessing.

We spotted a sailboat race underway during the day, which immediately had me thinking about my women’s sailing race crew back home – Amanda, Lindsey, Mandy, Amber… we really need to get back out there together to compete again soon!

Tonight we picked up a mooring ball in Pašman rather than anchoring. For non sailors, it’s basically a permanently secured floating ball attached to the seabed that boats can tie onto for the night. It’s easier than anchoring and great for protected bays.

Given today’s shorter post…. I’ll pause a moment to answer a question I’m often asked. How much storage do you have on that boat if you live there for 3.5 months each year? Honestly… there isn’t much. But one of the perks of our owner’s version catamaran is that the entire starboard hull (the right side of the boat looking forward) is dedicated to our bedroom and bathroom space. Even on a 40ft catamaran it actually feels surprisingly roomy. Note: ours is the smallest Fontaine Pajot catamaran model available, though they make nine different versions ranging all the way up to a 120ft floating mansion!

L to R: Main storage closet packed with jackets and extra kitchen/bathroom supplies; bathroom closet, top shelf doubling as our floating pharmacy, next shelf down holds swimsuits/underwear/socks; under bed storage hiding far more than expected; his & hers closets; and our surprisingly roomy master suite.

We kept things quiet tonight – sunset views from the front of the boat, homemade beef & broccoli, and a peaceful evening on the water. Some days don’t need much more than that 🙂
