Embarking on a Traditional Portuguese Food Tour in Porto turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Led by the charming and knowledgeable Harold, our group included fellow food enthusiasts from Coffs Harbour and Perth in Australia, England, and Florida. Together, we embarked on a culinary journey to explore Portuguese cuisine’s rich flavors and history.
Each stop was a delightful experience, offering multiple traditional dishes and a fascinating glimpse into their background and development. At our first stop, we sampled an array of local sheep and goat cheeses and savory dried meats. Next up were grilled sardines and spicy chorizo, which were quite tasty, followed by pulled pork sandwiches that were tender and flavorful. A second sampling of Francesinha, a hearty sandwich layered with meat, topped with a fried egg, covered in melted cheese, and smothered in a rich beer-based sauce, was found surprisingly tasty after our experience two days prior. Each dish was bursting with flavors that told stories of Portuguese culinary traditions and paired with local red and white wines, their flavors enhancing the tasting experience and making each bite even more enjoyable.
A sweet finish awaited us at the Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata, where we indulged in the famous Portuguese custard tarts. Freshly baked with a crisp, flaky crust and a creamy, sweet filling, these pastries were simply divine and the perfect end to our food tour.
