Ponza Playtime: Smiley Snacks, Roman Caves, and Steve’s Campaign for Crew of the Month

Today we sailed to Ponza, the largest of the Pontine Islands and a long-time favorite of Roman holidaymakers – ancient and modern. Known for its pastel-colored port, dramatic cliffs, secret grottos, and impossibly blue waters, Ponza delivers island charm without the tourist crush of Capri.

We anchored near Frontone Beach, skipping the marina in favour of our now-preferred spot: floating free with space to swim, jump, and paddleboard without limits. The kids fully approved. There were leaps off the bow, explorations on the paddleboard, and several back-of-the-boat swim-offs.

Then came an unexpected delight … kid-crafted hors d’oeuvres. Carefully arranged crackers topped with cheeses, prosciutto, and fresh fruit. There was a smiley face, a fruit-filled “bed”, and even something that may have been a boat sailing along in rocky seas. All deliziosi – equal parts art project and snack.

Later, we dinghied to Frontone beach for a casual lunch: sandwiches and Aperol Spritzes under striped umbrellas. We could get used to this!

Afternoon brought … you guessed it … more swimming. Steve, ever the multitasker, dove in and cleaned a quarter of Kora’s hull. I fear I may be getting replaced as chief crew member!!!

To cap off the day, we motored the dinghy along the cliffs to visit the Grotte di Pilato – a series of ancient Roman sea caves carved into the rock. Once used as fisheries for keeping moray eels (yes, really) and possibly for spa-like leisure by wealthy Romans, they added just the right amount of mystery and history to our floating paradise.

Dinner back on board was a classic Mediterranean favorite: fresh caprese salad and fish. Sadly, the fish came from the store… because despite our best efforts, we still haven’t caught one ourselves. Hope springs eternal!

Tomorrow: onward again: sun-kissed, well-fed, and wondering what the next island has in store.
