As we watched Kora being lifted out of the water on August 20th, marking exactly three months (92 days) of life on board, a swirl of emotions hit us. On one hand, the idea of heading back to land, reconnecting with family and friends, and indulging in the simple luxuries of a long, hot shower or a quick drive to the grocery store felt incredibly appealing. No more mad dashes with heavy grocery bags, racing against the sun to keep the cold items cold, and no more sleepless nights wondering where we’d find a marina spot as we navigated the crowded summer coastlines. Those nerve-wracking moments of searching for a safe harbor, often being turned away, particularly in our last few weeks, had tested our resolve.
As Kora’s time in the water came to an end, seeing the crane at Port Napoleon Marina in France that would lift our beloved boat out felt surreal. With Kora’s 6.63-meter width and the crane’s 6.9-meter limit, we were on edge, doubting whether we’d even fit. A helpful woman at the marina office suggested we buy foam kickboards to protect Kora’s sides — our fenders were too wide and just wouldn’t cut it. Trusting those flimsy boards with our boat’s safety had our hearts pounding. But, to our relief, everything went smoothly. The skill of the crew handling Kora was impressive, though a few urgent shouts in French made us more than a little nervous. Maybe it was for the best that we couldn’t understand exactly what they were saying!
With Kora securely stowed away, we made our way to the airport, exhausted yet content. The season was officially over. A surprise upgrade to United’s Business Select class made for a luxurious flight home — a treat so delightful that we found ourselves wishing the flight could’ve lasted just a bit longer.
& topped with cherries – this is the life!
This season has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with memories that will last a lifetime. As we say goodbye to Kora for now, we can’t wait to see what next season brings. We’re already taking reservations for next year. Haha! My brother Steve will be joining us in June with his family, and my cousin Khali has booked in a week in August. Ken & Chuck – Doug is planning his brother’s trip here in July – so get planning. Still some vacancies for adventure as we head toward Italy and Croatia. Can’t wait!!! Here’s to the adventures yet to come!
