Packing Up Kora: A Bittersweet Goodbye

Well, we’ve arrived at Port Napoléon in France, and it’s time to pack up Kora for the season. The process of storing the boat is more than just a physical task; it’s a poignant reminder that our incredible adventure is coming to an end.

We’re diving into a full-scale operation: scrubbing the entire exterior, cleaning enclosures and outside cushions, laundering bedding and towels, and thoroughly cleaning every inch inside. Everything must be meticulously dried before storage to prevent mold. We’re also making final checks and services on engines, plumbing, and all boat systems, while installing security measures to keep Kora safe over the winter.

As Monday’s scheduled lift-out approaches, anxiety sets in. The forecast is daunting, with winds hitting 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. We’ve pushed the lift-out to Tuesday, which is slightly better, but not ideal given our tight schedule. With our return flight to the USA on Wednesday, we’re racing against the clock, hoping for calmer seas and smoother operations.

Despite the stress, we can’t help but reflect on the wonderful season we’ve had sailing the west coast of France, Spain, and Portugal, a quick side trip to Africa venturing into Morocco, then exploring the Mediterranean and the eastern coast of Spain up to Marseille. It’s been a journey filled with unforgettable moments, and as we close this chapter, we look forward to the adventures that await us in the future.
