What an exhilarating experience it was to be invited by the Spanish Coast Guard Search & Rescue Team to participate in a drill while sailing off the eastern coast of Mallorca, Spain!
The thrill of having a helicopter overhead was unmatched — the wind from the blades whipping up the water around us, creating a dramatic scene that had onlookers in other boats probably wondering what was wrong and praying for our safety (thank goodness this was just a drill!). Juan, one of the rescuers, was absolutely lovely. He came on board, executed the drill meticulously, and took the time to chat with us, learning a little about each of us and explaining the entire rescue process, the roles of the rescuers, and the responsibilities of boaters.
We were fascinated and grateful, and couldn’t help but think how thrilling this job must be — the excitement of exhilarating (yet strenuous) work in such a gorgeous environment and the opportunity to help others. However, Juan mentioned that by age 55, the work takes its toll on the body, and most rescuers are ready to hang up their gear and enjoy some quiet time at home with a cup of coffee 🙂 Cue a double take, as we realized that, with the exception of Sophie, we’re all close to that age! Looks like Soph might have to take the reins for us.
Well what can we say — our guests definitely get the full experience when cruising with us upon Lady Kora! We’re expecting 5-star ratings from Steve & Soph for pulling out all the bells and whistles with our daily adventures. This day was no exception — thrills, education, and unforgettable memories.
