A Perfect Pause in Alicante: Friends, Castles, and Coastal Charm

Arriving in Alicante, we decided to take a break for a few days and give Kora a thorough cleaning, restock supplies, and start prepping for our voyage to the Balearic Islands. Our excitement doubled as we awaited the arrival of our good friends Sophia & Steve from the USA. Soph is one of Em’s closest friends from Tulane and her beach partner from freshman year. Steve a prior member of the Tulane Beach Parent Family 🙂

On our first night, we admired the Castillo Santa Barbara, lit up in bright lights, casting a magical glow over the city. The next day, after completing our cleaning duties, we ventured up to see the castle in person. Built in the 9th century by Muslim rulers, the castle tells a fascinating story of history and offers stunning views over the beach and marina where Kora rested.

Saturday took us to Alicante’s Old Town, where the 3D effects of the paved footpaths and the charm of San Francisco street captivated us. We then spent the afternoon at The Ocean Race Museum. The Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three or four years since 1973. It is by most accounts considered the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. The museum offered an exhilarating look into the world of ocean racing, featuring interactive exhibits and a rich history of the race. Groceries were next on the agenda to ensure Kora was fully stocked for our upcoming adventures.

Sunday’s highlight was the arrival of Soph & Steve. Enthralled by our tales of The Ocean Race Museum, we stopped there first, then explored the city together. A quick dip at the beach was cut short due to the thick seaweed, and then we left them for a few hours to enjoy a trip up the mountain to the castle. The day concluded with a lovely dinner had by the four of us in the Old Town.

Tomorrow, we set sail for Calpe, a short one-night stop before heading out to the Balearic Islands. Excitement is in the air as new adventures await!
