Today, we said farewell to Amanda and Evan, who are headed back to the United States. It was bittersweet to see them go, as we have so enjoyed their company. Also, we must admit to feeling slightly anxious as we set sail without a supervising captain for the first time. Fortunately, the sun shone gloriously above us, even as the winds quickly rose to 20-30 knots, which lifted spirits. Despite a roller coaster of waves and a few upset stomachs, we managed well, even docking in close quarters amidst relatively strong winds.
After a brief break to allow our hearts to stop racing, we headed ashore for a delicious pizza dinner. The warm, comforting flavors were just what we needed to steady our nerves. As we dined, we pored over maps of Orca activity along our upcoming route, already needing to pause and take a few deep breaths as we pondered the waters around Gibraltar. Quite surprised to learn there was an Orca contact near Gijon on June 6. We were sailing those waters just 3 days prior!
